Ecclesiastical Catechumen and Cookies
I’ve lived the past 2 years [at least a large portion of said years] in Moscow, and I have observed a very prominent trend, a sign to fit in, a need to be recognized, a cry for help, a small step taken to fit with the in-crowd, per se. I am indeed, talking about the mass converting of religion taking place, among students, in my Hostel.
Now, allow me to explain the situation. Back home, I am not exposed to such a strong group or lets just say movement of [as they call themselves, Followers of Christ], so I was rather intrigued when I saw this here. Please take into consideration, this is by no way a derogatory post, or one meant to create dispute, or foul among the group involved, but merely an observation of the author, and the author would have written up a different report, if, he noticed a similar trend of people converting into perhaps Judah-ism, Buddhism, Hinduism or what have you. If you’re easily offended, or a cretin, stop reading, because anyone without an open mind, or the ability to read and analyze what I wrote, before making a conclusion, would definitely make the wrong decision.
EVERYBODY AROUND ME IS CONVERTING! WTF?
Right with that out of my system, what the hell is happening, a drive to collect believers, or something like that. Let me enumerate my experience with this church-system.
I’ve been to this church a few times. It’s full of great friendly gay people. They’re always joyous and happily singing about preaching the word of God. Nothing wrong there, it’s perfectly fine. But, with all the singing, and with your spirits all lifted, that’s when the attack begins. The pastor calls upon everyone who has said the last ‘prayer’ for the first time to come meet with him, by enticing them with cookies and tea/coffee. Naturally when it was my first time, I just sat down quietly, but a few went up to him. It was rather simple what was happening, people had endorphins gushing down their throats, and God knows with the soulful music what else went haywire. Everytime they come out, a few end up converting into Christianity!
Some of them claim to have seen the light, some even went as far as getting baptized. Will someone explain to me what’s going on?

i certainly hope i wasn’t one of ur reasons why this post came abt… but a penny of my thought….
i admit i converted and it was certainly not here or any year which i stayed in moscow… i converted during my days in college and i’ve nothing to say (i have the right to remain silent and there is not need to justify my answer)
so what i’m half chinese and half indian but i converted into cristian… doesn’t mean i lost my way and that all the other deity seems to me is a devil… i still treat them like my God and i still worship them like i always do… and of course i still love them as much as i love jesus…
maybe i may take all this personal and “merajuk” again but to my eyes you don’t give a shit about anything so there is no reason for you to actually care about people converting into christianity…..
some people just feel needed and maybe the fellowship give them what they can’t find in human and that they can find it among those who share the same feeling for another reasons…
(it is complicated and i’m not sure what i just said but…)
anyway… no one is asking you to convert…. it is up to your own will if you want to or not…
like you always say… “no one point a gun to your head” and ask you to convert….
Cookies? Would you like some Christianity with that, sir? I can’t say I’m for all of this weekend conversions, either. But perhaps, some have seen the light and want to be followers of Christ. Though, I do believe that the light may dim for a few of that some once they realize that Christianity is more that screaming, “I love Jesus” and singing upbeat songs. This view comes, of course, not from basking in the light for 21 years, but from 11 years of cathecism.

I grew up with Christians ,may it be the bloody romans or the ever protesting terrorist cells walking around by us all the time .
Converting isn’t the issue here .
What really gets me is the way the converters(if you may) talk you into Christianity . They speak highly of it , whereas put down your current belief in a subtle way (i.e. why pray to many Gods when you have 1 to settle everything)
Being a strong-willed person sticking to principles , I shot down one of these converters once . He was 7 yrs senior to me and was taken aback seeing how rude I was .
But it really didn’t matter which religion I believed in to begin with , the fact that I can’t seem to accept the cheap feeling in being brain-washed into believing something new after all the years I have been thought otherwise .
Just imagine this situation ….Our Alphabet system dictates A , B , C , D …and so on …This was taught to toddlers .
What if 20 years down to line someone comes to you and starts a movement saying that the system is wrong . It should be D,B,C,A and jumbled up of all sorts .
What would you do ?

Cool dude with long hair : I would be lying if I said you had nothing to do with this post, but it would be even more so a lie if I said that you are the primary cause of it. To be completely honest, I was thinking for a bit to post something about this topic, and I guess your discussion with me was that final ‘umph’.
If you feel you need to justify the reason why you converted, then my friend, you converted for all the wrong reasons. I’ll take it in good faith, you don’t, which is why you never justified it.
Your ethnical background is of little concern to me, for it’s moot considering the ‘church’ caters to those ranging all the way from Africa.
The fact that you claim you still ‘recognize’ the existance (!) of deities from different religions is in fact, against, Christianity. If I am not mistaken, in one of this ‘church’ sessions, one of the prayers included, :- “Punish all those idol worshipers, and fakers, who pretend to be what you [Jesus/Jehovah] are” .. so I guess that makes you a bad Christian. There’s a big difference in respecting another’s religion and, well, believing in it. You can’t do both and claim to be a staunch Christian, It’s hypocritical.
I do not give a shit, but it does not mean I wish to be ignorant. If shit is happening around me, I want to know the root and reason of why it’s happening. While I may continue not giving a shit about it at a later time, depends on whether or not this will cause a global epidemic [read: affect my pants].
I agree, people feel lonely, and they do stupid things, as I’ve mentioned in the first paragraph of my post. Thanks for the reiteration.
People have told me to convert before this, as a mater of fact, but I’ve just not bothered. And no, while they may have not had a gun to my head, heard of Jehova’s witnesses?

Vk : Well said, but, if somebody comes up to me and tells me the alphabet is all wrong, I’d first listen to his crock-shit, analyze it and come up with my own opinion instead of just completely dismissing it. Brain washing? Perhaps, but then again, lets fire up our own neurons once in a while. Seniority? What the hell is seniority in a religious sense? God preaches equality and here we have supposedly elder people practicing the religion longer than you telling you what’s right and wrong? Again, Crock-shit. The bible says Eve was made from Adam’s rib, that doesn’t mean I keep women accountable for that shit, and how they screwed Adam over with the apple to this day making women my slaves on how all they should be used for is taking care of the kids, fornication, and laundy? In my opinion, being religious is more about a leap of faith than anything else. My name is supposed to mean ‘christbearer’ but I hardly carry christ, in fact I mock him all the time, but I still do have such a name and I like it (there is a reason why I like it). As you know, faith is belief without reason. Reason isn’t necessary for faith.
A warty old man offering cookies luring small kids or the weak willed to believe in his cult sounds… dubious in a way, but he’s just doing his job of spreading the faith. It’s okay if stupid kids or weak willed idiots need an imaginary friend to better their lives, but those who join to make friends and be in a community should be stoned, burned or crucified. Where are the inquisitors?

it has rely been sum time since i went through ur blog..n when i actually go through it..cant believe u actually posted on sumthing bout converters…i understand that ppl around you are converting n all..like wat they say,they see d light and they feel like doing wat they feel iz right…well,thatz wat they feel like doing it..well up to tiz date there’s about 10 new believers in tiz hostel(in 1 year) or maybe more…n are you trying to say that wat they feel n do iz wrong??….or if it is right or wrong aso,y does it bother u so much??….ppl accepting Christ…ppl seeing a whole new world out there..they saw d light…let them have it…y be so bothered bout it?..each of us are given a choice to make..n none of us are forced to do anythng..or choose anything….give them a break…they are trying to knoe Christ…letz see how far they go…u may say,they knoe nuts bout their new religion..but they are trying their bezt to knoe HIM…y iz it happening here in Moscow??…well,whther we like it or not…it is happening here in our hostel…there iz nothing to be explained…it iz happening n we are all seeing it happening..
